T-Mobile in the UK is currently trialling a new campaign using Bluetooth Technology to encourage more visitors into their high street stores. Graphics in the shop windows aim to prompt customers to activate the Bluetooth on their phone to receive a free gift from the Telco once in store.
What's the opportunity for Telcos?
This technology is by no means 'brand new', however it seems seldom-used. I believe this form of advertising medium has only touched the surface here in Australia, providing a good opportunity for a Telco stay ahead of it's competitors.
I think Telcos within Australia should be using this technology more often in store and at events - almost in hope that the brand becomes associated with this technology and service.
This is a great way to attract new customers in store if they are not with the Telco already or (if the gift is valuable enough) it could create an envy-factor amongst friends who are not on the same network.
This is a cool technology to get creative with: to push creative ideas that have not been executed before.
Issue 16 is about a semantics technology company called Amplify that provides Natural Language Processing (NLP) solutions for customers who want to understand and better target advertising to online content. What's this all about?
Mark Redgrave, CEO of Amplify, believes there are two main problems with social media and advertising;
Brand safety
Monetizing social media
This is because the content in social media is unregulated, making brand advertiser's hesitant to advertise in such uncontrolled and unmonitored spaces. What Amplify does is intercept the content (i.e. every word on a page!), by reading it, understanding it, then analysing the meaning of it to provide insights to advertisers, which will help determine if the advertising space will be effective.
For example: There's an article on SoHotRightNow! that is about Optus. But, what does it say about Optus? Is it good? Is it bad? With Amplify's semantic technology, it is possible to understand the meaning of the content and provide advertisers with advice on whether Optus or even a competitor should advertise in that space or not.
What is the opportunity for Telcos?
Greater insights into where online advertising should be positioned means more cost effective advertising dollars and greater click through rates.
Greater insights into how the market is responding to your brand and competitors. This may lead onto better advertising campaigns so that they respond to customer sentiments.
I have been using TubeMogul for a while now and it has proved a great free tool for distributing videos to multiple online video sites simultaneously. Here is a summary of what TubeMogul can offer.
What is TubeMogul?
TubeMogul is the first online video analytics and distribution company serving publishers large and small who need independent information about video performance on the Internet and automated upload to the Web's top video sharing sites.
TubeMogul's analytic technology aggregates video-viewing data from multiple sources to give publishers improved understanding of when, where and how often videos are watched, track and compare what's hot and what's not, measure the impact of marketing campaigns, gather competitive intelligence, and share the data with colleagues or friends.
For sites that host their own video, TubeMogul offers tracking far beyond the traditional metric of video "views." TubeMogul InPlay, which can be set up in any Flash video player within minutes, tracks rich viewership metrics such as audience engagement, attention span and site performance -- all in real-time.
